Art Business Book: Real Artists Don’t Starve by Jeff Goins

We’ve all heard the phrase, “starving artist.” Author, Jeff Goins, wrote an entire book about this myth titled, Real Artists Don’t Starve: Timeless Strategies for Thriving in the New Creative Age. Goins breaks down common myths that plague the lives of most creatives and features each myth as a different chapter of his book.

Subject Matter: This creative self-help book has very readable language and is easy to follow. Goins uses real life people as examples to help combat these myths and tells the story of a creative or two in every chapter. This method of writing small personal vignettes, helps the reader connect the myth and the concept to life.

I originally picked up this book thinking it was about creative prosperity and finance based on the title. I thought that it would be strategies to combat the “starvation” of a creative career whether real or perceived and how to better handle finances. However, this is not a finance book, which personally left me a bit disappointed.

Is this book for me? This is a good book for someone who is an emerging artist who is struggling with some of these beliefs that come with a creative career. Its also a good book to pick up for a more established artist who needs a reminder every once in a while.

This book could also be a, “Yeah-yeah I’ve heard this before just worded differently,” for those of us who binge creative business books.  The first chapter seemed like a chapter that summarized Julia Cameron’s (The Artist Way) take on shadow artists. The second chapter seemed to play off the book by like Auston Kleon called, Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative. So, this book brings together and builds upon the common myths and beliefs that have been written about.

Goins has a few additional books that I am interested in checking out as well that deal with writing and creative discovery. These would be great books for writers and other creative entrepreneurs!
